My autistic burnout

Illustration of the cycle of burnout and meltdowns

Story line

1. Belinda is happy. She’s doing work she enjoys and is somewhat of a challenge

2. She was happiest in the lab working with DNA and other biochemical molecules or at her desk analyzing data

3. She learned quickly so she could learn a lot in a short period of time but just as quickly she would take on more work…

4. And get so tired she couldn’t function.

5. Meltdowns are different for everyone but for Belinda it looks like crying, rage, dissociation and in worse cases self harm.

6. So what does she do?? Belinda has learned to rest when her body tells her and to embrace her necessary responses to an often overwhelming external world. She tries some hobbies, and makes sure to get outside every once in a while. Ultimately Belinda knows that she’s a lil different and that’s ok, by prioritizing self care she can find peace again
